Post 64 – 12/05/24 – Do You Care About Your Community? Saturday 8th June (3 Minute Read)
We have had a few enquiries from people asking about the details for Saturday, 8th June so we thought we would flip posts. Today we will look at the itinerary for the day and next weekend we will look at the possible impact that RHUL is having on our schools.
So what is happening on 8th June….
The Billing:
- 1230 – Protest: Gather At RHUL Main Gate, Egham Hill
- 1240 – Photograph
- 1250 – Rob The Piper
- 1300 – Councillors That Care Reception: Social Hall, Harvest Road.
- 1325 – Barbed Poetry Recital
- 1330 – Q & A With Royal Holloway’s Professor Tracy Bhamra
- 1400 – Finish
Protest & Photo
We invite you, your family, friends and neighbours to muster outside Royal Holloway’s Main Entrance. This will be an opportunity for you to join others to express your dissatisfaction with RHUL’s senior management team. We will then take a couple of photos. More details to follow about arrival information, dress code (fancy dress is going to be an option), placards and associated prizes!
Protest Goals
- To highlight to Royal Holloway’s Senior Management team that many residents are concerned about their 25% growth plan and their lack of plans to mitigate the impact.
- To increase awareness of the issue to the local community.
Rob The Piper
This is not a drum and bass act. Rob is a bagpiper who has kindly agreed to pipe us from the protest, over the footbridge to the Social Hall on Harvest Road for the second part of our series of mini-events. Though Rob is an accomplished piper (and I am looking forward to listening to his pipes) they are of course often associated with being anti-social and noisy. These 10 minutes are a light hearted pop at the issues of ASB & Noise that many of us will be all too familiar with.
Councillors That Care Reception
We have hired the Social Hall on Harvest Road and have invited our local councillors to meet with us. We have also invited the Egham Residents’ Association and the Englefield Green Village Residents’ Association. This will be an opportunity to ask them what they are doing about the issues. It will be a stand up and mingle type of event. The backstory here, is that we have in the past councillors in post that were not being proactive in tackling the issues. Indeed we have had some councillors wilfully turning their backs on the problem.
Barbed Poetry Recital
We will then have a 5 minute ‘barbed’ poetry recital. This will be a short piece poking fun at RHUL’s management. And don’t let it ever be said the WNTT doesn’t give something back to the community.
Q&A With Royal Holloway’s Prof. Tracy Bhamra
Unfortunately we are having to cancel this particular mini-event. We did ask Prof.Tracy Bhamra or a representative to attend a Q&A with us but unfortunately she declined. I understand that it may have been uncomfortable for her to address local residents but we do think her decision not to attend speaks volumes. In order to utilise the hall time though, we thought it an opportunity for you to ask us any questions that you may have about WNTT instead. So this event will now be titled: Q&A With We Need To Talk About Royal Holloway. It doesn’t have quite the same ring to it but we hope to be able to answer any questions that you may have.

So that is it, a series of mini-events that we hope will be of interest to you.
Arguably the most important 15 minutes of the schedule is the protest & photos – it would be great to get a small crowd together here to help convey our message clearly.
We hope the day will be received as it is intended, light-hearted and fun but with a serious agenda. It is designed to be family friendly, short yet impactful, with potential long-term benefits for all of us. It is definitely not about pitchforks, chains or glue.
If you care for your community we do hope that you will be able to attend. This may be a one time opportunity for you to join others to express how disappointed you are with RHUL’s senior management team and its approach to growth. Growth shouldn’t come at any expense to our community: its lack of consideration is not acceptable and that they should learn how to change its behaviour in order for it to become a genuinely good neighbour.
More details about the events in mid-week posts in the run up to Saturday 8th June in addition to the longer weekend posts.
Best wishes
