Post 67 – 23/05/24 – Banners, Placards, Fancy Dress & Prizes – Further Details About Saturday 8th June (3 Minute Read)

This is the first of three mid-week posts that are designed to provide a bit more information about Saturday 8th June. This one is about Banners, Placards, Fancy Dress & Prizes…

To recap, our day (not sure we can really call it a day, 1hr 30min) is meant to be light-hearted but with a serious agenda. It is designed to be family friendly, short yet impactful, with potential long-term benefits for all of us. And arguably the most important 15 minutes of the schedule is the protest/ photocall….

Banners & Placards

If you would like to come with a banner or a placard that would be great. Similarly, if you don’t want to come with a banner or placard that is great too. We are just happy you have taken some time out of your day to support your community.

If you are making a sign though we thought we would have some prizes ready for those that want to go the extra mile. Prizes will be awarded for both artistic merit and best slogan.

Judging Guidelines:

  • Slogans should be relevant to the issue and of course be clean and family-friendly.
  • Points will be given to legibility and size.
  • Creativity around design will always be appreciated. (Judging panel may appreciate a walking A-Board for example.)
  • Substrate: children’s paint on cardboard is very good but you might have something better?

Some suggested slogans:

  • ‘No More HMO’s’
  • ‘Don’t Pillage Our Village’
  • ‘Good Luck Finding Parking Here’
  • ‘Communities Not HMOs’
  • ‘No More Expansion’
  • ‘RHUL Does Not Care’
  • ‘This Is A Quiet Area’

Fancy Dress

As with the placards & banners, there will be a couple of prizes for best fancy dress. Again, please don’t feel that you need to dress up though, it is just another dynamic if you fancy it – it could be good for the kids? And for those that are camera shy, a pair of sunglasses and a hat may help you go incognito?

Judging Guidelines:

  • Relevance to the issue. Can you tie it back to the RHUL problem? Lots of points.
  • Effort in costume design. Face paint etc will also earn lots of points.

Some suggested outfits based on the RHUL issue:

  • ‘Big Monster/ Little Monster’
  • ‘Bagpiper’
  • ‘An HMO’ (Ambitious)
  • ‘A Gnat’
  • ‘Rubbish Bin’
  • ‘Lemmy’

We will try to have some runner up prizes too. At this point, may we thank some of our sponsors for donating the prizes: Genevieve’s Gallery, Stopp’s Bakery and The Spar.

Please remember that the day is definitely not about pitchforks, chains or glue. More details to follow. If you have any questions about the event at this stage please send an email to: enquires@weneedtotalkaboutroyalholloway.com
