Post 73 – 13/06/24 – Saturday 8th June Debrief (3 Minute Read)
What a huge, huge success on all levels. Let’s start at the start…
Approximately 25 people attended the photocall. We were anticipating a 5-10% turnout so we were delighted to be at the top end of our expectations. Fantastic. A special thank you to those that came along especially those that were a little bit anxious about the idea!
The atmosphere was really positive: more thanks to those that took the time to dress up and/ or made a placard, they were really effective. (Please see photos below.)
Rob started up his pipes on cue at 12:45 and we proceeded to follow him to the Social Hall. (We had another impromptu photocall on the footbridge first.) It was great to see both residents & students opening their windows and coming to their doors to see what all the noise was about.
At the Social Hall we were met by our Councillors. Proceedings started with a prize giving: Dumbledore scooped a double for best placard and best dress. The prizes though were very kindly passed on to our two youngest attendees.
A constructive round table conversation then took place where the problems of HMOs, ASB and Parking were highlighted once more and possible solutions discussed. The meeting concluded with WNTTARH and the Councillors agreeing to meet to plan the next step. At the Social Hall we were also joined by a RHUL student – her contribution to the discussion was hugely insightful.
But that was only one part of the day. We also had a team distributing our ‘Alternative Prospectus’ to prospective students and their parents. Here we anticipated distributing 500 leaflets but in the end we distributed 964 nearly doubling our target. (Smiley Emoji.)
The cherry on the cake though was the press that we received due to us being prepared to take Direct Action – the awareness about the issue was raised to a new level. (We will dissect this media coverage in a separate post – we certainly learnt a lot there.)
May we take this opportunity to thank all our councillors that are taking an active role in addressing the RHUL problem. Can we also thank the WNTTARH ‘Taking Part’ Team that helped devise and deliver Saturday’s events. And special thanks too to Rob The Piper – you were absolutely awesome.
One last thing, and the reason for posting this today, is that this Saturday, Saturday 15th, Magna Carta Day no less, members of the Senior Management Team will be presenting their vision for RHUL in the 2030s. Anyone care to join us and fast forward to the 2030s? I can’t imagine they will have a piper but it should still be interesting nonetheless.
Best wishes,
