Post 27 – 06/05/23 – Election Results | Holy Moly

The political gods were looking upon us favourably yesterday. What a result!

We could not have wished for a better outcome: not only did Trevor win Englefield East and Isabel retained her seat for Egham but Eliza beat Tanya in the West too! (54:46 – it was indeed close.)

But it worked out even more favourably: the Conservative’s lost their majority in Runnymede, and that was even closer than the Englefield Green West seat. This one was really, really close. In the end, Addlestone North was won by just 30 votes. Just 30 votes was the difference between a Conservative majority and a no party majority. Holy moly: unbelievable.

So what does this mean for us?

This we believe is a watershed moment. In Englefield Green, we are now represented by 4 councillors that have the interests of their residents at the forefront of their minds. How refreshing is that. Yes, we will still have Cllr. Nick Prescott in post, no doubt continuing to try to put his spanner in but his effectiveness in blocking pragmatic solutions to our problems will be somewhat hindered. (His seat is up this time next year btw.)

Isabel’s re-election in Egham means that her good work pushing for an Article 4 Direction can continue with her fellow Independent colleagues.

At Borough level we will also benefit. No longer will the Conservative’s be able to control the agenda. Here, we will hopefully benefit from seeing motions put forward and voted through that impact us favourably.

I was dancing yesterday afternoon. What a result! I still can’t get over it.

But we need to remind ourselves that our councillors cannot do it all by themselves. They need our support. And we need to help them in order to help ourselves. Next week we will share a powerful first hand account of one man’s experience from 17 years ago to draw lessons from history.

I will close by congratulating Trevor, Isabel and Eliza. Congratulations! I can only imagine how tired you must be after your campaigning. Thank you. Today, the lie of the land has changed significantly in our favour. It is now time to focus our efforts on RHUL.

Best wishes,
